The job

As an experienced engineer, you will be a key member of our back-end team. You will be designing and building our technology to collect, curate and organise information. You will come up with plans to extent our data models and architecture to support new features and look for ways to improve existing components. Your job will be driven by data and input from the product team. All improvements come from a deeper understanding of user needs, usage data and customer feedback. You will be a mentor for other engineers on the team and a sounding board or sparring partner for the product and curation teams in the organisation. The close cooperation between these teams make this an exciting role in which you can really make an impact.

Your tasks

• Build products that impact educators and learners globally
• Build and maintain highly-scalable APIs in Java and Groovy using Spring framework.
• Monitor, maintain and improve our web crawler, based on Apache Storm and StormCrawler, keeping it efficient yet polite.
• Enhance our search engine based on OpenSearch.
• Keep our AWS cloud-based architecturerunning together with our DevOps engineers.
• Collaborate with product to find creative solutions for user needs and product features
• Effectively communicate results

Your profile

• Passionate about software, technology, and education
• 8+ years of experience as a Java developer
• Design and architecture of micro-services and REST APIs
• Writing web backends in Java and Spring.
• Wealth of understanding of development methodologies and design patterns
• BSc or MSc degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, or a related field
• Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Knowledge of Dutch and other languages is an advantage).
• High degree of personal responsibility over designated duties.
• Able to learn and apply new concepts and tools rapidly.
• Focused on helping the team win, before personal gain.
